چکیده
The classic controversy in psychology and philosophy concerning the epistemological primacy of cognition or affect is an underlying current in The Amygdala. Though not directly confronted by any of the authors, the debate seems to be answered by a confluence of positions: the amygdala, among other areas in the central nervous system, is capable of integrating highly processed sensory information while simultaneously organizing a coordinated behavioral and affective response in the organism. The amygdala, as Eric Halgren reminds the reader, is at the interface of affect and cognition, mind and body. "One suspects," he writes, "that if the amygdala did not exist, it would have been invented" as a metaphor for these connections. While the debate is far from settled in The Amygdala, those readers interested in this field will find much to stimulate thought. This informative volume is a must for anyone seriously interested in the study of emotion. Though the answer to James's question, What is emotion?, still remains a mystery, readers of The Amygdala will be in a position to evaluate where modern neuroscience stands on this fundamental issue.
